How to Play Ranked

Ranked in The Strongest Battlegrounds is where shared-HP fundamentals get measured. Public lobbies forgive whiffs; Elo lobbies turn every missed wall dash and every greedy post-M1 block hold into stolen points. This guide covers how to enter 1v1 and 3v3 Elo, how first to two rounds sets flow, and which habits actually climb—assuming you already practiced Getting Started, Wall Combo Guide, and Blocking and Defense.

Entering the ranked lobby

On PC, double-click the crossed swords icon near the top-left of the HUD to enter the duel/ranked lobby. Inside you will find queues for competitive modes (historically 1v1 and team variants; 2v2 and the newer 3v3 Elo with global matchmaking depending on the current season UI). If the Cosmic-era global matchmaking menu is available in your build, use it for structured 3v3 team queue instead of only ad-hoc lobbies.

You can also search and invite a specific player for a direct challenge when you want a set without full matchmaking variance. Confirm icons and binds anytime on Controls.

1v1 ranked flow

  1. Queue until the game pairs you with a similar-rank opponent.
  2. Load into the ranked map and pick your character during the allow window.
  3. After both players load, a short countdown begins—character lock happens when the fight is live.
  4. Fight a first to two rounds match (best of three round wins).
  5. Each round is a life/stock style fight on the shared HP ruleset—win by executing your convert plan, not by running down a separate unique health table.

Community notes: finishing with certain skill executions can display special “ULTIMATE GAME” style flair versus a standard “GAME,” but both still count as round wins. Rank theft scales with rating gap—beating similar ranks moves more points than stomping far-lower opponents, while upsets can steal larger chunks. Exact numbers shift with seasons; play for consistent round wins, not for farming weak lobbies.

3v3 Elo and team ranked

3v3 Elo adds a team rating layer and global matchmaking so you are not stuck only hosting manual lobbies. Queue with a coordinated trio when possible. Duplicate character rules may force a random swap if two teammates lock the same kit—decide locks in voice chat before the timer.

Team defense matters: assign who peels, who holds Burst (Burst Guide), and who is allowed to greed One-Shot Combos on an isolated target. Ultimate clash awareness from Character Interactions stops two teammates from awakening into a useless cutscene while the third dies.

Character select strategy

  • Climb with one main (Strongest Hero is still fine) until your wall, block, and ultimate cancel are trustworthy (Ultimate Combos).
  • Keep a single secondary that covers a bad matchup from the Tier List—not five half-learned alts.
  • In team modes, build a comp with clear peel and confirm tools rather than three hyper-greedy cinematic kits.

Round checklist (mental loadout)

Before countdown ends:

  1. Remember dash cooldowns: do not burn forward dash before a wall opportunity.
  2. Decide whether meter should be spent this round or held for a confirm.
  3. Pick a stage plan: corner carry versus midscreen poke.
  4. In teams, name the focus target.

During the round:

  • Convert walls when they are free; do not force them into Block forever.
  • After your M1 string, dash or safe tool—do not autopilot hold F.
  • If FPS stutters, your settings are throwing—fix via Settings and FPS before the next set.

Point psychology and tilt rules

First-to-two means a single thrown round puts you in losers’ side of the set. Take the full reset between rounds: change only one thing (more patience, more wall hunts, less raw G). Soft reset after two lost sets—lab in a private server instead of queueing while angry.

Watch Players in your rank band, not only top board gods. Their habits transfer better. Claim Codes between queues if you care about rewards, then refocus.

Prerequisites before you spam ranked

You are ready when you can:

  • Complete M1 strings (3% + 3% + 4% + 5%) without dropping the fourth hit randomly.
  • Hit wall converts eight times out of ten in a private server.
  • Wake up with back/side dash intentionally.
  • Spend ultimate on a confirm, not on fear.

If those fail, return to the Guides Hub order and delay Elo. Ranked is a measurement tool, not a teacher that replaces lab time.

Session structure that climbs

  • Warm up: ten walls, ten block releases, one ultimate cancel.
  • Play three to five ranked sets.
  • Review one round you threw; write one fix.
  • Stop or lab—do not infinite queue.

Ranked rewards boring excellence: queue correctly, win two rounds with clean converts, and keep your character pool small. Do that and Elo rises even without exotic tech.

FAQ
